'Iraq – the new Vietnam' is now a cliché. But lies and misinformation about the resistance abound, even on the left. Anne Alexander and Simon Assaf challenge these, and provide the fullest account of its rise to have appeared anywhere yet. They conclude that it is a movement for national liberation that deserves the support of anti-imperialists everywhere.

Next on Bush's 'axis of evil' list is Iran. But what is life really like for workers and for women? Is it a near-totalitarian theocracy? Where did the new opposition movement come from and what do they stand for? Eleheh Rostami Povey answers these and many other questions in an interview that challenge widespread preconceptions.

Revolution burst into the last century in 1905 and set a pattern that recurred throughout it. 1905 also peoduced a flowering af Marxist theory. Mark Thomas shows the relevance for today of the events and the ideas.

What are the prospects for industrial class struggle in Britain? In our new polemics section Gregor Gall argues aginst what he sees as the over-optimism of the Socialist Workers Party and Martin Smith replies.

Europe's biggest anti-capitalist movement and its most succesfull far-left party are both in Italy. But the party Rifondazione Comunista, is making overtures to the centre-left. Fabio Ruggiero criticises the turn and Chris Harman looks at a historical precedent.

Plus Argentinian Marxist Néstor Kohan challenging the 'post-Marxist' orthodoxies of the 1990s; Talat Ahmed on Mulk Raj Anand, the committed Indian novelist, interviewed just before his death in september; Martin Empson on Marxism on the web; reviews on Zionism, Max Weber, Bob Dylan, Hardt and Negri's Multitude, the British Marxist historian John Saville and politcal Islam.
